Color and Light - Chapter 10 + 11

- Sky color is rarely one shade and depends on where the sun is.
Atmospheric Perspective: bold colors of the foreground fade until they match the color of the sky. Bright white colors become warmer with distance. Only works in illuminating light.
Thousands of images about Mary Queen Of Heaven | "UNIQUE ART" | Pinterest | Blessed Mother, Virgin Mary and MothersReverse perspective - sunsets, happens when moist vapors of dust clouds hover in the hair near the sun. Rainstorms, foreground is cooler than the distance bc science.
Golden hour/twilight lighting: bold and dramatic colors are present. Everything is washed in a purple multiply or overlay layer (West Clare Graveyard, 1995).
Sunsets - sun interacting with lots of layers of dust, air, and clouds, creating vibrant colors. higher clouds are lighter and lower are more yellow or red
Fog Mist Smoke Dust: Contrast drops off rapidly as forms recede in space. Light comes from all directions bc sun can't directly reach the ground. Lighter reflected shadows
Rainbows - Keep mythos and science in mind in symbolism and effects. Slits and paths. Make it happens in realistic conditions.
Skyholes and Foliage - be aware of your negative space, basically. and transparency. smaller skyholes should be darker. Ragged more realistic character = more skyholes. dependant on the tree.

Sunbeams and Shadowbeams - God rays. shafts of light made visible in dust or moisture laden atmosphere. Vanishing point of the sun. High screen of clouds or darker background making rays visible. filled with dust, vapor, or smog. View is toward the sun. shine through uneven arpetures = 3d objects.
Dappled light - when light is filtering powerfully through an irregular surface. Treeeeeesssssssss.
Cloud shadows - interrupt the view towards the sun, patches of light are scattered. control viewers attention. soft edges.
Illuminated foreground - immediate foreground is light, load it with detail, and then through middle distance in shadow. invites movement within.
Snow and Ice - denser than clouds or foam, whiter and picks up a lot of colors. light scattered below surface of snow takes on a blue hue. High contrasts surround it.

Water, reflection and transparency - Some rays bounce off and some don't. (reflection and refraction). things reflect back darker. cast shadows happen with unclear water.
Mountain Streams - water is clearer and faster. foam should be painted last as a highlight.
Color Underwater - reds are supressed. Things appear more greenish and blue. keep in mind water's impurities.
Light's Changing Show
Serial Painting - do sketches on landscapes to help exercise visual memory and improve lighting. Sky helps
view subject but lighting determines our mood. Constant comparison between things.
